Growing Fear of Islamisation: Representation of Online Media in Malaysia

The use of hate speech in Malaysia has increased with access to the new media. Facebook, Twitter and comments sections news portals have been misused for distributing hateful content. This heightened tensions among Malaysians. Violent incidences occurred, such as church burnings, desecration religious symbols places worship mosques. Some are opinion that intolerance contributes hostilities. However, discourse surrounding is focused on Muslims Islam, which adds growing fear “strict Islam” amongst Sensationalised media reports issue “creeping Islamisation” may widen division between ethnicities. study explores how popular Malaysian represent Islamisation by using content critical analysis. Findings show tends be framed negatively, contributing restriction fundamental freedoms.
